What this programme is about
An MSc Biotechnology takes biological science into applied research and production, where laboratory findings have to become useful processes, products or technologies.
Your programme might lean toward medical biotechnology, industrial bioprocessing, agriculture, molecular methods or bioinformatics.
Compared with undergraduate study, there is usually more emphasis on experimental design, advanced techniques and interpreting research literature.
Scaling matters. A biological process that works in a small flask may behave differently when moved toward production, which is why bioprocessing and quality control are important in many programmes.
Ethics, biosafety and regulation may also feature because biotechnology can involve sensitive biological materials and consequential applications.
Before applying, compare laboratory facilities, research groups, industry links and whether the degree is primarily research-oriented or designed for biotechnology employment.
Inside the curriculum
Skills you'll build
Where this can take you
What studying this programme is like
Advanced molecular biology and genetics can support work with DNA, gene expression and cellular systems.
Bioprocessing looks at how biological products are produced, controlled and scaled.
Bioinformatics may be used to analyse sequence data or other large biological datasets.
Industrial biotechnology can cover fermentation, enzymes and biological production systems.
Research methods and statistics help you design experiments that can withstand critical review. The dissertation or laboratory project is where you demonstrate independent scientific judgement rather than simply technical procedure.
Is this likely to suit you?
Good fit if you...
- You already have a strong biological or biochemical foundation.
- You enjoy laboratory research.
- You want applied life-science specialisation.
- You are interested in biotechnology industry or research.
- You are comfortable with data and experimental work.
Think twice if you...
- You strongly dislike laboratory work.
- You want little molecular biology or biochemistry.
- You are not interested in research methods.
- You expect all biotechnology programmes to focus on the same industry.
