The Commonwealth Master's Scholarship supports one-year taught postgraduate programs aligned with six primary development themes: Science and technology for development; Strengthening health systems and capacity; Promoting global prosperity; Strengthening global peace, security, and governance; Strengthening resilience and response to crises; and Access, inclusion, and opportunity.

Key benefits of the award include:

  • Full University Tuition Coverage: Complete payment of approved tuition fees for your master's program at participating UK higher education institutions.

  • Monthly Living Stipend: A living allowance of £1,084 per month standard rate, or £1,330 per month for scholars enrolled at universities within the London metropolitan area.

  • Travel and Relocation Grants: Fully funded economy-class return air travel from your home country to the UK, alongside a warm clothing allowance where applicable.

  • Study and Thesis Support: Access to grants covering study-related travel within the UK or overseas, plus dedicated thesis preparation allowances.

  • Family Allowances: Monthly supplementary funding for single parents, widowed, or divorced scholars bringing dependent children under the age of 16 to live with them in the UK (£465 per month for the first child, and £114 per month for subsequent children).

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for a Commonwealth Master's Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Citizenship & Residency: Must be a citizen of, or hold official refugee status in, an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person, while residing permanently in an eligible Commonwealth nation.

  • Academic Record: Must hold a first degree of at least upper second-class (2:1) honours standard, or a lower second-class (2:2) degree paired with a relevant postgraduate qualification (typically a Master's degree).

  • Previous UK Study: The CSC does not normally fund a second UK Master's degree. Candidates applying for a second Master's degree must provide strong justification detailing why the additional study is required.

  • Financial Need: Must demonstrate that you are unable to afford master's level study in the UK without full scholarship funding.

  • Academic Availability: Must be ready to start academic studies in the UK at the beginning of the UK academic year in September/October.

Required Documents

Candidates must prepare and submit the following documentation via the CSC online application system:

  • Proof of Citizenship or Refugee Status: Clear copies of your valid passport or national identity document verifying age and nationality.

  • Academic Credentials: Complete official transcripts detailing all higher education qualifications, accompanied by certified English translations if applicable.

  • References: Formal recommendations from at least two referees, submitted directly by the referees through the online application portal (including your current employer, if applicable).

  • Detailed Development Impact Statement: A four-part essay explaining how your proposed study addresses global, national, and local development priorities, your plans for applying new skills, expected developmental outcomes, and measurement metrics.

  • Career Objectives & Personal Statement: Formal outlines of your five-year and long-term career goals, a detailed study plan, and a personal statement highlighting leadership experience and voluntary engagement.

Step-by-Step Application Guide

Direct applications are not accepted by the CSC. Candidates must apply through an approved nominating body while simultaneously completing the online CSC application. Follow these sequential steps:

  1. Select an Approved Nominating Body: Identify your application route through either a National Nominating Agency in your home country or a designated NGO/charitable organisation.

  2. Review Nominator Requirements: Confirm your nominating body's specific rules, additional eligibility criteria, and local closing dates, which may precede the central CSC deadline.

  3. Research UK Courses: Use resources such as Study UK, UCAS Postgraduate, and Prospects to choose an appropriate taught master's degree at an approved UK university.

  4. Complete the CSC Online Application: Create an account on the CSC Central application portal. Fill in your educational background, employment history, publications, and four-part Development Impact statement.

  5. Request References Early: Enter referee details into the portal so automated submission requests are dispatched well before the final deadline.

  6. Submit Supporting Documentation: Upload official transcripts, proof of citizenship, and study plans to the online portal, then complete your final submission before the portal closes.

Deadlines & Status

The Commonwealth Master's Scholarship application portal opens annually in September. Candidates must submit their completed online forms and supporting documents by October or November, depending on the current application cycle calendar. Nominating bodies submit their shortlisted candidates to the CSC in December, with final selection results announced by July of the following year.
