Program Overview & Key Benefits

The Commonwealth PhD Scholarship is structured around six core sustainable development themes: Science and technology for development; Strengthening health systems and capacity; Promoting global prosperity; Strengthening global peace, security, and governance; Strengthening resilience and response to crises; and Access, inclusion, and opportunity. The award provides an exceptionally generous financial package designed to support scholars throughout their research.

Key benefits of the award include:

  • Complete University Tuition Coverage: Full payment of approved tuition fees for the entire duration of your three-year doctoral program.

  • Monthly Living Stipend: A tax-free living allowance of £1,133 per month standard rate, or £1,390 per month for scholars studying at universities located within the London metropolitan area.

  • Travel and Relocation Grants: Fully funded economy-class return air travel between your home country and the UK, alongside an initial warm clothing allowance where applicable.

  • Research and Fieldwork Support: Access to grants for study-related travel within the UK or overseas, funding for approved overseas fieldwork (including return airfare), and a paid mid-term visit home.

  • Family and Accessibility Allowances: Monthly supplementary allowances for accompanying spouses and dependent children under 16, alongside comprehensive, tailored support for scholars with declared disabilities.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for a Commonwealth PhD Scholarship, applicants must satisfy strict eligibility requirements regarding citizenship, academic standing, and demonstrated financial need:

  • Citizenship & Residency: Must be a citizen of, or hold official refugee status in, an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person, while maintaining permanent residency in an eligible Commonwealth nation.

  • Academic Preparation: Must hold an undergraduate degree of at least upper second-class (2:1) honours standard, or a lower second-class (2:2) degree paired with a relevant master's degree.

  • Doctoral Registration Status: Must not be currently registered for, or have previously commenced, a PhD or MPhil leading to a PhD at a UK university, in your home country, or elsewhere.

  • Financial Need: Must demonstrate that you cannot afford to undertake doctoral study in the UK without full scholarship assistance.

  • Academic Availability: Must be available to start your full-time academic studies in the UK at the beginning of the UK academic year in September/October.

Required Documents

Applicants must assemble and upload the following documentation through the CSC online application system:

  • Proof of Citizenship or Refugee Status: High-resolution copy of a valid passport or national identity card showing your photograph, date of birth, and citizenship.

  • Official Academic Transcripts: Comprehensive transcripts detailing all higher education qualifications, including certified English translations for non-English documents.

  • Development-Focused Research Proposal: A structured research plan detailing your academic methodology, timeline, and concrete link to one of the six CSC development themes.

  • Academic References: Letters of recommendation from at least two referees on official letterhead, detailing your research capability and potential impact.

  • UK Supervisor Supporting Statement: Formal confirmation from a proposed supervisor at a UK university supporting your research plan and confirming institutional capacity to supervise your PhD.

Step-by-Step Application Guide

Because the CSC does not accept direct applications, candidates must apply through an approved nominating body alongside their direct CSC portal submission. Follow these steps sequentially:

  1. Select an Approved Nominating Body: Identify the correct nomination route for your country or institution. Main routes include National Nominating Agencies in your home country, selected universities nominating their academic staff, or designated NGOs and charitable organizations.

  2. Review Local Nominator Rules: Check your chosen nominating body's specific guidelines, additional criteria, and internal closing dates, which fall earlier than the central CSC deadline.

  3. Secure a UK University Supervisor: Contact academic departments at UK universities, present your research proposal, and obtain a formal supporting statement from a faculty member willing to supervise your project.

  4. Complete the CSC Online Application: Register on the CSC Central application portal. Fill in your academic history, paste your development impact statements, upload required documents, and submit before the portal cutoff.

  5. Submit Nominator Documentation: Complete any separate application forms or regional evaluation steps required by your local nominating agency.

  6. Track Nomination Confirmation: Nominating bodies review candidate pools and forward their final shortlists to the CSC in December for central committee evaluation.

Deadlines & Status

The CSC online application portal opens annually in September and closes for candidate submissions in October or November. Nominating agencies complete their evaluation and submit final candidate nominations to the CSC in December.

Because national nominating agencies enforce earlier internal cutoffs, you should confirm local submission deadlines directly with their designated nominator.
