Eligible: All Countries Doctorate (PhD)

Spend 12 months conducting PhD research in the UK. Explore eligibility, stipends, and institutional links for Commonwealth Split-site Scholarships.

Doctoral research thrives on collaboration, specialized equipment, and fresh academic perspectives.

Funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and administered by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK (CSC), the Commonwealth Split-site PhD Scholarship allows doctoral candidates registered at universities in low- and middle-income Commonwealth countries to spend up to 12 months conducting research at a UK university.

By building upon existing departmental partnerships between home and UK institutions, the award provides fully funded UK access without forcing researchers to relocate permanently or abandon their home doctoral registration.

Program Overview & Key Benefits

The Split-site PhD scheme is designed to enhance institutional capacity and academic linkages across the Commonwealth. Scholars remain enrolled at their home institution while spending a full academic year working under joint supervision at a UK university equipped with specialized laboratories, archives, or research facilities.

The research must align with one of the CSC's six sustainable development themes: Science and technology for development; Strengthening health systems and capacity; Promoting global prosperity; Strengthening global peace, security, and governance; Strengthening resilience and response to crises; and Access, inclusion, and opportunity.

Key benefits of the award include:

  • Full UK Tuition Fee Exemption: Complete coverage of all UK university tuition fees and bench fees for the 12-month placement period.

  • Monthly Living Stipend: A tax-free living allowance of £1,378 per month, or £1,690 per month for universities located within the London metropolitan area.

  • Fully Funded Travel: Approved economy-class return air travel from your home country to the UK at the beginning and end of your 12-month tenure.

  • Warm Clothing & Study Allowances: An initial warm clothing allowance where applicable, alongside study travel grants for academic conferences within the UK or overseas.

  • Single Parent Allowances: Additional financial provision for widowed, divorced, or single parents bringing dependent children under the age of 16 to live with them in the UK (£465 per month for the first child, and £114 per month for subsequent children).

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for a Commonwealth Split-site PhD Scholarship, candidates must meet clear criteria regarding citizenship, PhD enrollment, and institutional links:

  • Citizenship & Residency: Must be a citizen of, or hold official refugee status in, an eligible low- or middle-income Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person, while maintaining permanent residency in an eligible Commonwealth nation.

  • PhD Registration: Must be registered (or scheduled to register by the start of the award) for a doctoral degree at an approved university in an eligible Commonwealth country.

  • Institutional Link: A formal, established institutional or departmental partnership must exist between your home university and the proposed UK university. Personal research collaborations between individual academics do not satisfy this requirement.

  • Financial Need: Must demonstrate that you cannot afford to undertake a 12-month research attachment in the UK without this scholarship.

  • Direct Application: Unlike standard Commonwealth PhD awards, candidates apply directly to the CSC without needing a nomination from a national agency.

Required Documents

All supporting documentation must be submitted directly through the CSC online application system prior to the deadline:

  • Proof of Citizenship: Clear copy of your valid passport or national identity card showing your photo, date of birth, and nationality.

  • Higher Education Transcripts: Complete academic transcripts detailing all undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications, with certified English translations if needed.

  • Home University Supervisor Statement: A formal supporting statement from your home PhD supervisor detailing the project, joint supervision arrangements, and the existing institutional link.

  • UK University Supervisor Statement: A formal supporting statement from your proposed supervisor at the UK university confirming research capacity, supervisory commitment, and departmental links.

  • Academic Reference: At least one independent academic reference evaluating your research potential, analytical skills, and motivation.

Step-by-Step Application Guide

Because candidates apply directly to the CSC rather than through national nominating agencies, the process centers on establishing joint supervisory consensus:

  1. Confirm the Institutional Link: Ensure your home department and the proposed UK university department share an established institutional partnership or formal academic link.

  2. Secure Joint Supervisors: Obtain written agreement from both your current home PhD supervisor and a proposed UK university supervisor who will guide your 12-month research plan.

  3. Draft a Development-Focused Proposal: Prepare a detailed research proposal demonstrating high academic quality and clear relevance to your home country's socioeconomic development.

  4. Register on CSC Central: Create an account on the official CSC online application system and complete all academic, employment, and research proposal sections.

  5. Dispatch Automated Supervisor & Referee Requests: Enter the email addresses for your home supervisor, UK supervisor, and referee early so they receive automated submission prompts.

  6. Submit Direct Application: Verify that both supervisor statements and your reference letter have been submitted to the portal, then complete your final application submission before the December deadline.

Deadlines & Status

Applications for Commonwealth Split-site PhD Scholarships open annually in the autumn (typically September or October) and close in December for study commencing the following academic year (September/October).

As a candidate you must ensure their home and UK supervisors submit their supporting statements before the portal cutoff, as incomplete applications will not be processed.
