Achimota School

Achimota School formally opened in 1927, but the idea behind it began earlier, when the Gold Coast government was looking for a broader approach to education. The plan was ambitious for its time: boys and girls would learn within the same institution, and education would combine academic study with character formation, practical development and service.

Rev. Alexander Garden Fraser became the school's first principal, while Dr. James Emman Kwegyir Aggrey played an important role in shaping its early philosophy. If you look at Achimota's history, one of the most interesting things is how much larger its original educational role was. The institution once covered education from the lower levels through teacher training and university-level work.

Those different functions were eventually separated, and Achimota developed into the senior high school you know today. Its early emphasis on coeducation, culture, practical learning and service, however, remains an important part of the school's identity.

At Achimota, your academic work leads towards the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Like other senior high schools in Ghana, you study core subjects alongside electives connected to the programme you enter.
