A practical guide to Ghanaian universities

Choosing a university in Ghana

You may already have the University of Ghana or KNUST in mind. The harder question is whether your chosen course, entry route and budget fit. Use the published profiles above to find a starting point, then check the university's current programme and admissions pages before you apply.

What you will find here

This page lists the Ghanaian universities with published SideScholar profiles. It is a growing directory, so a missing name does not mean an institution is unrecognised. Ghana's Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has a broader directory organised by institution category, including categories that SideScholar may list separately.

Which application route applies to you?

A school leaver applying with WASSCE or SSSCE results may need particular subjects for a course. Diploma holders and mature applicants can face quite different rules, and a route offered by one university may be limited to certain programmes. Start with the admissions notice for the exact course and applicant category.

The University of Ghana's mature applicant page describes one specific route, while KNUST lists several applicant categories. They show why you should check the institution's own rules rather than assume a single national requirement.

Look beyond the course name

Two programmes called Business Administration might take you through different modules or specialisations. Read the course outline, check which institution awards the qualification, and find out where and how it is taught. A programme shown on a university's main site may run at a different campus or in a different study mode from the one you expect.

Still deciding on a subject? Explore fields of study or browse programmes, then use the university's own course page for the final details.

Picture an ordinary week on campus

Where will your classes actually be? A university's listed region may not tell you the teaching location of every programme. Check the campus, the journey from where you would live, and whether the facilities you need are available there.

If you hope to live on campus, ask how accommodation is allocated and what happens if you do not get a place. If you will commute, work out the time and transport cost for a normal teaching week.

Work out what attendance will cost

The tuition figure is only part of the budget. Ask for the current fees for your programme and applicant category, then add accommodation, transport, meals and course materials. Payment dates matter too, especially if you will be arranging support from family or an employer.

Public and private tell you who owns the institution, not what your final bill will be or how good the course is. Compare the actual fee schedules and ask each university about available support.

Check the institution and your programme

An institution's standing and a particular programme's accreditation are related questions, but they are not interchangeable. GTEC's institution directory and accreditation information are places to begin. If the course leads to a regulated profession, ask the relevant professional body whether it has additional requirements.

If a listing and an official record seem to disagree, contact the university or GTEC before paying a fee. A SideScholar profile is a discovery tool, not proof of accreditation.

Questions about universities in Ghana

Does this page list every university in Ghana?

No. The count reflects published SideScholar profiles. Use GTEC's directory when you need to check the wider range of tertiary institutions.

How do I find universities in a particular region?

Use the region filter when more than one region is represented, or search by university name or city. Then check the teaching campus for your course on the university's site.

Do I need WASSCE results to apply?

Not always. Some applicants enter through diploma or mature routes. Check the course's current admissions notice to see which qualifications it accepts.

Are technical universities and university colleges included?

Only if they have a published profile classified here as a university. GTEC uses more detailed categories, so its directory is better for checking a particular institution's official classification.

Does public or private ownership tell me which university is better?

No. Ownership is useful context, but the course, fees, location and recognition tell you much more about whether a university suits you.

Can I apply through SideScholar or use a listing as proof of accreditation?

No. Apply through the university's official process and check recognition with GTEC or the relevant professional authority.
