Finding a Senior High School in Ghana

Choosing a senior high school is rarely just about picking a familiar name. You may already have a few schools in mind, but the better question is: do they actually fit the student, the programme and the practical realities of attending?

SideScholar currently lists 139 published senior high schools across Ghana, with more profiles added as their information is reviewed and published.

Start with the programme you want to study. From there, look at where the school is located, whether it is boys, girls or mixed, and whether students attend as day students, boarders or both.

Two schools can offer the same programme and still be very different choices. One may be closer to home. Another may provide boarding. One may offer the elective combination you want while another does not.

Use the directory to narrow your options, open the individual school profiles and compare what is currently known about each school. Final placement is handled through Ghana's official school-selection and placement system, so SideScholar should be used as a research and comparison tool rather than an admission portal.

Senior High Schools by Region

Where a school is located can make a big difference.

For some families, staying close to home makes travel easier and reduces costs. Others may be comfortable considering schools much farther away, especially where boarding is available.

When comparing regions, think beyond the distance on a map. Consider transport, how often the student may need to travel home, the cost involved and whether there are relatives or other support nearby.

Choose a region below to see the published schools currently available there. Only regions with at least one published SHS are shown.

Explore Schools by Programme

For many students, programme choice should come before school choice.

If you already know you want General Science, Business, Home Economics, Agricultural Science or another programme, there is little value in choosing a school first and discovering later that it does not offer what you need.

Programmes also do not always look identical from one school to another. The electives available, teaching resources and practical facilities can differ even when the programme name is the same.

If you are still deciding what to study, open the programme guide first. If you already know your preferred programme, go straight to the schools offering it.

Day, Boarding and Day & Boarding Schools

Where will the student live during the school term?

It sounds like a simple question, but it can quickly change which schools make sense for a family.

A day school may work perfectly if the journey is manageable. A boarding school can open up options much farther from home. Some schools accept both day students and boarders.

If a school is listed as Day & Boarding, that does not mean every student who gains admission will automatically receive a boarding place. Available space and the placement offered to the student still matter.

If boarding is important to you, use the Residential filter to narrow the directory, then check the student's eventual placement and confirm the school's current arrangements before making travel or accommodation plans.

Understanding School Categories in Ghana

You will often see senior high schools described as Category A, B or C.

These categories can be useful when comparing schools, but they should not become the entire basis for choosing one.

A Category A school is not automatically the best school for every student. In the same way, being placed in a Category B or C school does not tell you everything about the quality of teaching, the available programmes or the experience a particular student will have there.

Instead, ask more useful questions.

Does the school offer the programme you want? Is the location practical? Does the residential arrangement work for your family? Are the facilities suitable for the subjects you hope to study?

Category is useful context. It is not the whole story.

What Should You Look At Before Choosing a School?

Begin with the programme and then go one level deeper.

Suppose two schools both offer General Science. Do they offer the same electives? If you are interested in a particular science or technology path, does the school have the facilities needed to support it?

The same applies to practical programmes. Laboratories, workshops, studios, kitchens, farms and other specialist spaces can affect how much hands-on learning students actually get.

Then look at location.

A school may appear attractive on paper, but what happens if a day student has a difficult journey every morning? What will transport cost over an entire term? If the school is far away, is boarding available?

Gender and residential setup matter too. Where accessibility support is important, use the SEN filter as a starting point and then contact the school to confirm what support is currently available.

Most importantly, connect the school to the student's interests and longer-term plans.

A famous school without the right programme may be a weaker choice than a less familiar school that fits what the student actually wants to study.

Open several profiles. Compare them carefully. Discuss the shortlist before submitting school choices.

How SHS Placement Works in Ghana

Junior high school students select schools and programmes through Ghana's national school-selection and placement process.

BECE performance matters, but it is not the only factor involved. The schools and programmes selected, available places and the placement rules being used for that cycle can all affect the final result.

Be careful with old cut-off scores shared on websites, WhatsApp groups or social media. A figure from a previous year should not be treated as a permanent admission mark.

Use SideScholar to research and compare your options, then rely on official placement instructions and the placement result itself when making the final decision.

Ghana Senior High School FAQs

How many senior high schools are listed on SideScholar?

SideScholar currently lists 139 published senior high schools in Ghana. More school profiles are added as their information is reviewed and published.

Can I search senior high schools by region?

Yes. Choose a region to see published schools in that part of Ghana. You can then narrow the results further by district and other available filters.

How do I find boarding senior high schools in Ghana?

Use the Residential filter to look for schools that offer boarding or both day and boarding arrangements. A school's general residential classification does not guarantee that every admitted student will receive boarding, so always check the placement offered and confirm current arrangements with the school.

Can I filter schools by programme?

Yes. Choose a programme to see published schools currently linked to it on SideScholar. You can also open an individual school profile to see the programmes currently verified for that school.

What is the difference between Category A, B and C schools?

Category A, B and C are classifications commonly used when describing Ghanaian senior high schools. They can help when comparing schools, but category alone does not measure everything about teaching quality, programme strength or how suitable a school will be for a particular student.

Does a Day & Boarding school guarantee boarding?

No. It means the school generally accommodates both day students and boarders. Whether an individual student receives boarding depends on the placement offered and the school's available capacity.

How are students placed into senior high school in Ghana?

Students submit school and programme choices through Ghana's national school-selection and placement process. BECE performance, the choices submitted, programme availability and available places can all influence the final placement.

Where can I check my official SHS placement?

Use the official CSSPS website for placement results and current instructions.
