Finding a Senior High School in Ghana

Ghana has senior high schools across every region, from large schools in busy cities to smaller schools serving towns and surrounding communities. SideScholar currently lists 50 published schools in this Ghana directory. New profiles appear as their information is reviewed and published.

A familiar school name can be a useful starting point, but it should not make the decision on its own. Schools differ in the programmes they offer, the subject combinations available within those programmes, their location, gender and residential setup. A school that works well for one student may be impractical for another because of travel, accommodation or programme availability.

Start with the programme you want to study, then compare the schools that offer it. Look at the region and district, consider whether day or boarding arrangements suit your family, and open each school profile for the practical details currently available. Official placement is handled through Ghana’s school-selection system, so this directory is a comparison tool rather than an admission or placement portal.

Senior High Schools by Region

School options vary across Ghana’s regions. Some students prefer a school close to home, while others are able to consider a wider area. Travel time, transport costs and the support available near the school can matter as much as distance on a map.

Choose a region below to narrow the directory. The links use the same verified geography as the school records, and they only appear for regions with at least one published SHS.

Explore Schools by Programme

Programme choice matters because it shapes the subjects a student is likely to take and the paths available after SHS. General Science, General Arts, Business, Home Economics, Visual Arts, Agricultural Science, Applied Technology and STEM do not lead to identical subject combinations. Schools can also differ in the electives, facilities and practical teaching they provide within the same programme.

Read the programme guide first if you are still comparing options. When you know what you want, use the school link to see Ghana SHSs currently connected to that programme.

Day, Boarding and Mixed Residential Schools

Some senior high schools are day schools, some are boarding schools, and others accept both day students and boarders. These arrangements affect travel, living costs, daily routines and how often a student returns home.

A Day & Boarding classification does not mean every student automatically receives a boarding place. Capacity and the placement offered to the student still matter. If boarding is important to you, use the Residential filter, check the placement you receive and confirm the school’s current residential arrangements before making plans.

School Categories in Ghana

Ghana SHS listings may describe schools as Category A, B or C. Families often use category when comparing choices, but it should be treated as one piece of information rather than a complete judgement about a school.

Category A does not automatically mean a school is the right fit for every student, and Category C does not mean a school provides poor education. Category alone does not guarantee admission difficulty. Compare the actual programme, location, facilities, residential arrangement and learning environment that matter to the student.

What to Look At Before Choosing a School

Begin with the programme offered and ask what electives are available within it. Two schools may both list General Science or General Arts while offering different elective combinations. Students interested in practical programmes should also look at the laboratories, workshops, studios, kitchens, farms or other facilities needed for meaningful hands-on learning.

Location affects more than convenience. Consider travel distance, transport, the cost of visiting home and whether a day student can reach school reliably. Compare the school’s gender and residential setup with the student’s needs. Where SEN accessibility is relevant, use the directory filter as a starting point, then contact the school to confirm the support and facilities currently available.

Finally, connect the choice to the student’s academic interests and longer-term goals. A well-known school without the right programme or practical support may be less suitable than another school that fits the student’s plans. Open several profiles, compare their verified programmes and discuss the shortlist before submitting choices.

Official placement

How SHS Placement Works in Ghana

JHS students choose schools and programmes through Ghana’s national school-selection and placement process. BECE performance matters, but the choices submitted, programme availability and the number of places available can also affect where a student is placed.

Old cut-off scores found on websites or social media should not be treated as permanent admission rules. Requirements and competition can change. Use SideScholar to compare schools, then rely on current official instructions and your placement result for the final decision.

Common questions

Ghana Senior High School FAQs

How many senior high schools are listed on SideScholar?

SideScholar currently lists 50 published senior high schools in Ghana. The number changes as reviewed school profiles are published.

Can I search senior high schools by region?

Yes. Choose a Region to see schools in that part of Ghana. You can then narrow the list further by selecting one of its Districts.

How do I find boarding senior high schools in Ghana?

Use the Residential filter and choose Boarding or Day & Boarding. Always confirm the current arrangement with the school and check the residential status on any placement you receive.

Can I filter schools by programme?

Yes. The Programme filter shows published schools linked to that programme on SideScholar. Open a school profile to review the programmes currently verified for it.

What is the difference between Category A, B and C schools?

These are classifications used in Ghana SHS listings. A category is one reference point, but it does not by itself measure teaching quality or guarantee how difficult admission will be.

Does a day-and-boarding school guarantee boarding?

No. It means the school generally supports both arrangements. Your placement and the school’s current capacity determine whether you attend as a day student or boarder.

How do students get placed into senior high school in Ghana?

JHS students submit school and programme choices through Ghana’s national selection and placement process. BECE performance, submitted choices, programme availability and available places can all affect placement.

Where can I check official school placement results?

Use the official CSSPS website for placement results and current instructions.
