About Bolga Girls Senior High
Bolga Girls Senior High has a longer story than the date on the current secondary school suggests. The campus began as a girls' middle boarding school in 1956, became a women's training college in 1965 and took on its secondary-school identity in 1973.
That history makes the school part of a wider story about expanding educational opportunity for girls in northern Ghana. What began with a much smaller intake has grown into a large girls' day-and-boarding school in Bolgatanga.
Students at BOGISS can choose Business, General Arts, General Science, Home Economics and Visual Arts, with the programme pages showing what each choice covers.

History
The school now known as Bolga Girls began in 1956 as Bolgatanga Government Girls Middle Boarding School. In 1965 it became Bolgatanga Women's Training College, reflecting the need to prepare more female teachers for schools in northern Ghana.
A Graphic Online history explains that the school became Bolgatanga Girls' Secondary School in 1973 with 35 pioneer secondary students.
The change from middle boarding school to teacher training college and then to secondary school shows how the campus kept adapting to different educational needs.
If you study at BOGISS today, you are joining a school whose identity has been tied to girls' education for decades, even though the form of that education has changed.
Academics
The current school register lists Business, Home Economics, Visual Arts, General Arts and General Science at Bolga Girls.
Those five programmes cover very different kinds of learning. Home Economics and Visual Arts require regular practical work, Business leans into commercial and quantitative subjects, while General Arts and General Science open different tertiary options.
The Home Economics guide shows what students study in that option at BOGISS.

Facilities
Bolga Girls supports both academic and residential life, so classrooms are only one part of the facilities students depend on. Science, Home Economics, dormitories, dining, sanitation and staff support all affect daily life.
A severe rainstorm in 2022 damaged several parts of the campus. Graphic Online documented damage to the science laboratory, Home Economics centre, dormitories, dining hall and other facilities.
When considering Bolga Girls Senior High, ask about the facilities used by students in your chosen programme.
Student Life
BOGISS brings together girls from different communities across the Upper East Region and beyond. Boarding life, clubs, sport, leadership, worship and creative activities give students relationships and responsibilities outside the classroom.
The school's 50th anniversary as a secondary school placed girl-child education at the centre of the celebration, connecting the current student body to the reason the school developed in the first place.
That history can matter when you are a student because it gives you examples of women who came through the school before you and continued into teaching, public service, business and other fields.
Accommodation
Both day students and boarders attend Bolga Girls Senior High. At BOGISS, boarders remain on campus after lessons while day students travel home.
