About Fijai Senior High School
Fijai Senior High began in 1952 as Sekondi Day Secondary School, part of the Gold Coast government's Accelerated Plan for Education. The school first operated from buildings at the old Sekondi Hospital before moving to Fijai in 1955.
Students and old students are known as Young Souls. The motto, Ad Astra Per Aspera, means "To the Stars Through Hardship" and captures the idea of pushing towards something higher even when the route is difficult.
Fijai SHS gives students a choice of Business, General Arts, General Science, Home Economics, STEM and Visual Arts; the programme pages set out the subjects in each one.

History
Fijai was established in 1952 as Sekondi Day Secondary School under the 1951 Accelerated Plan for Education. The school was commissioned on 29 January and initially used the old Sekondi Hospital buildings.
The Fijai Old Students Association history records the early years and the move to the present Fijai site in 1955, when the school adopted the Fijai name.
The first intake was small and mixed, but the school grew steadily into one of the Western Region's most recognisable co-educational schools.
The story of Fijai is closely tied to Ghana's effort to make secondary education available to students who could not afford the older boarding-school route.
Academics
The current register lists Business, Home Economics, Visual Arts, General Arts, General Science and STEM at Fijai.
The STEM programme is particularly important because it adds Engineering Science and Robotics to the school's current academic options.
The subjects within STEM are set out in the STEM guide; check them before choosing Fijai SHS.
Admissions & Entry Guidance
Entry to Fijai Senior High starts with the choices you make after BECE. When choosing Fijai SHS after BECE, compare the subjects in Business, General Arts, General Science, Home Economics, STEM and Visual Arts.
The addition of STEM gives science-oriented students another decision to make. Check whether General Science or the STEM programme better matches the subjects you will need later.
Past Fijai SHS cut-offs may be useful for comparison, but do not rely on them as a fixed admission mark.
Fijai SHS has day and boarding students, but your placement will say which applies to you. Read it on the CSSPS website.
Facilities
Fijai supports academic, practical and residential life for a large mixed student population. That means classrooms, laboratories, creative spaces, dormitories, dining and gathering areas all matter.
Old students continue to add to those spaces. In 2024, the FOSA 1998 year group commissioned a campus pergola intended for student clubs, community groups and parent visits.
Student Life
Fijai students are known as Young Souls, and the FOSA alumni network gives that identity continuity long after graduation.
The school's 70th anniversary brought Young Souls together around its history, achievements and future. A Graphic Online feature captures the strong old-student culture around the celebration.
Sport, clubs, debate, drama, science activity and leadership provide other ways for students to take part beyond formal lessons.
Accommodation
Fijai Senior High runs day and boarding arrangements. Day students leave after school activities, while Fijai SHS boarders continue with meals and evening study on campus.
Check the wording on your Fijai SHS placement so you know whether to prepare for day or boarding school.
