About Ghana National College

Ghana National College was born out of the political and educational upheaval of 1948. After student protests in Cape Coast and the dismissal of teachers and students, a new school was created with support from Kwame Nkrumah. It opened with just 17 students and a name that anticipated the country Ghana would become.

The school is often called Ghanacoll, and past students are known as Nananom. Its motto, Pro Patria, means "For the Fatherland," which fits a school founded around education, national service and self-belief.

The programme choices at Ghana National College are Business, General Arts, General Science, Home Economics and Visual Arts; see the programme pages for the subjects behind each name.

History

Ghana National College was established in Cape Coast in July 1948, less than a decade before independence. Its beginnings were tied directly to the unrest that followed the 1948 disturbances and student protests in Cape Coast.

The school's official history records how Kwame Nkrumah helped the dismissed teachers establish a new school, beginning with rented rooms, handmade furniture and a small first intake.

The College moved through several temporary locations before permanent buildings were developed on the hills outside Cape Coast. That journey is part of why the school anthem speaks so strongly about service to Ghana.

Ghanacoll was created with nation-building in mind. The school name, chosen before independence, was itself a statement about the future its founders wanted to see.

The College has long had a visible science tradition. A MyJoyOnline report from the 2026 NSMQ shows Ghanacoll continuing to compete strongly in science and mathematics.

Facilities

The College sits on a large hilltop campus outside central Cape Coast, with academic spaces, dormitories and activity areas spread across the site.

Old students continue to contribute to practical improvements. A Graphic Online report documents a sanitation project funded by the 1982 year group to improve conditions for students.

Student Life

Students and past students carry a strong Ghanacoll identity. The name Nananom is widely used for alumni, while the school anthem connects student life with culture, wisdom, zeal and service to the country.

Sport, clubs, competitions, student leadership and house life give students several ways to take part outside lessons. The mixed student body also brings together young people from different regions and backgrounds.
