About Ghana Senior High School, Tamale
Ghana Senior High School, Tamale began in 1960 as Ghana College, one of the schools created through Ghana's post-independence expansion of secondary education. The first intake was small and all male, but the school later grew into the mixed day-and-boarding community known across northern Ghana as GHANASCO.
The motto, Dani Suma ni Suglo, comes from Dagbanli and means "Good intentions and patience." It fits a school whose history is tied to steady growth, science, public service and the wider development of education in the north.
The options at GHANASCO are Agricultural Science, Business, General Arts, General Science, Home Economics and Visual Arts; compare their subjects on the programme pages.

History
GHANASCO was established in 1960 by the government of Ghana as one of the Ghana Education Trust schools. It opened as Ghana College with 70 boys and was intended to help expand the skilled workforce needed in a newly independent country.
The first headmaster was Kenneth Luther Purser, a Jamaican educator, while Abu Kassim Tahidu became the first senior prefect. The school's early history page records how the original Arts and Science streams developed before the school expanded into a wider secondary school.
One unusual episode came in 1970, when a mathematics teacher and a group of science students built and launched a rocket on the school grounds. The event remains one of the more distinctive stories in GHANASCO's academic history.
The school later adopted the name Ghana Secondary School. Its story is closely tied to the expansion of secondary education in northern Ghana.
Academics
GHANASCO prepares students for the WASSCE through six programmes: Agricultural Science, Business, Home Economics, Visual Arts, General Arts and General Science.
Before choosing Agricultural Science at GHANASCO, read the Agricultural Science guide and check the subject mix.
Science has a long place in the school's story, from the 1970 rocket project to later participation in science and mathematics competitions. The point is not the headline itself. It is that practical and competitive science has been part of GHANASCO life for decades.

Student Life
GHANASCO students are often called GHANASCANS, and the school anthem itself uses that name with pride. The motto, school colours and residential houses all contribute to a strong identity that reaches well beyond the classroom.
The school has produced graduates across business, sport, public service, academia and other fields. A Presidency feature on GHANASCO's anniversary gives a sense of the alumni community and the range of people who still identify closely with the school.
Sport, clubs, competitions and school events give students different ways to become part of campus life. For some, those activities become as memorable as the programme they studied.
