About Kanton Senior High

Kanton Senior High in Tumu began life as something different from the school students know today. The school was established in 1962 as a teacher-training college before being converted into a secondary school in 1972 when local demand for second-cycle education became more urgent.

That transition gives KANSEC an unusual educational lineage. The same campus moved from training teachers for basic schools to educating generations of senior high students across Sissala East and the wider Upper West Region.

Students at KANSEC can choose Business, General Arts, General Science, Home Economics and Visual Arts, with the programme pages showing what each choice covers.

History

Kanton's history begins in 1962, when it opened as a Teacher Training College.

A Ghana News Agency account of the school's 60th-anniversary celebration records that the teacher-training college was later converted into a secondary school in 1972.

The change reflected a growing need for secondary education in the area. KANSEC then developed into a mixed day-and-boarding school serving students across Sissala East and beyond.

That history makes Kanton more than an old school. It is a school that changed purpose when the educational needs of the region changed.

Student Life

KANSEC's old-student community remains closely connected to the school and has been repeatedly called on to support current students and development projects.

The school's long history also gives students a link to former teacher trainees as well as generations of secondary-school graduates.
