Institution overview and key context for prospective students.

Konongo Odumase Senior High School began in 1953 as part of the expansion of secondary education in the Gold Coast. The school sits between the twin communities of Konongo and Odumase, and that geography is reflected directly in its identity.

Institution guide

History

KOSS opened in 1953 with a small first group of students. Its creation formed part of the wider effort to expand secondary education beyond the few schools that already existed in the Gold Coast.

A history of Konongo Odumase Senior High School records the early staff, the first student body and the move to the school's permanent site in 1963.

The school's position between Konongo and Odumase helps explain the motto Baanu Yɛ. It speaks to cooperation between two communities as much as it speaks to students working together.

At KOSS, unity is not an abstract slogan. It is built into the geography and history of the school.

Academics

Konongo Odumase prepares students for the WASSCE through Agricultural Science, Business, Home Economics, Visual Arts, General Arts and General Science.

That range means two students in the same school can have very different academic lives. Science and Agricultural Science lean more heavily on scientific and mathematical work, while Visual Arts and Home Economics include substantial practical learning.

Before choosing Agricultural Science at KOSS, read the Agricultural Science guide and check the subject mix.

Facilities

KOSS operates as a mixed day-and-boarding school, so its campus supports academic work, practical programmes, residential life and clubs and other activities.

The school has grown far beyond its first intake, which means classrooms, laboratories, creative spaces and residential facilities all have to serve a much larger community than they did in the 1950s.

Student Life

KOSS students share an identity built around the twin-town story, the yellow-and-green school colours, house life, sport, clubs and old-student traditions.

Students also take part in newer civic activities. KOSS was one of the Ashanti schools represented when the Ghana News Agency reported the inauguration of student Justice Clubs in the region.

That kind of activity gives students another place to practise leadership and think about responsibility beyond examinations.
