About Kumasi Girls' Senior High School

Institution overview and key context for prospective students.

Kumasi Girls' Senior High School began as a private girls' school in 1953 and later became part of Ghana's public secondary system. After operating from different locations, it eventually settled at Abrepo, where generations of students have come to know the school simply as KUGISS.

Students are called Ahemmaa, or queens. The motto, Semper Fidelis, means "Always Faithful," and the school connects that idea with responsibility, sincerity, excellence and the development of confident young women.

KUGISS has Business, General Arts, General Science, Home Economics and Visual Arts, and the programme pages can help you compare the subject combinations.

Institution guide

History

Kumasi Girls started in 1953 as a private secondary school for girls founded by Caxton Williams, a Sierra Leonean educator. Its first home was at Susanso near Bomso Junction on the Kumasi-Accra road.

The Ghana Education Service's Senior High Schools Annual Digest records the move to Old Tafo, the government takeover in 1963 and the later relocation to the permanent Abrepo campus in 1992.

That movement from private school to public school helps explain why different dates sometimes appear in anniversary discussions. The school itself began earlier than the government takeover.

The constant thread is girls' education. Every stage of the school's history has kept that purpose at the centre.

Academics

Kumasi Girls' Senior High School teaches Business, General Arts, General Science, Home Economics and Visual Arts at SHS level.

The five programmes suit different strengths. General Science places more weight on laboratory science and mathematics, while Home Economics and Visual Arts combine academic study with significant practical work.

Use the Home Economics guide to compare Home Economics with the other options at KUGISS.

Facilities

The Abrepo campus supports both academic and residential life, so students depend on classrooms, laboratories, ICT resources, dining areas, water systems and boarding facilities working together.

One practical improvement came through a mechanised water project designed to improve access to clean water for students and staff.

Student Life

Kumasi Girls students are called Ahemmaa, and the name is meant to describe more than appearance. The official school language connects it with courtesy, confidence, discipline, humility and responsibility.

Old girls remain closely involved. During the school's anniversary activities, alumnae were encouraged to organise through year groups and support projects for the school.

Sport, clubs, worship, leadership and house activities give students several ways to develop beyond their programme.
