History

Ofori Panin Senior High School opened in September 1961 as Tafo-Kukurantumi Secondary School. It was one of the Ghana Education Trust schools created during the country's early post-independence push to expand secondary education.

The official OPASS alumni history records the 1961 foundation and the school's development as a co-educational school serving Akyem Abuakwa and students from elsewhere in Ghana.

The school was later renamed Ofori Panin in honour of the Okyenhene. The nickname OPASS became part of the school's identity, and past students are known simply as Opassians.

The school began as a national expansion project, but over time it developed a distinct Akyem identity of its own.

Facilities

Public school information for OPASS lists science and computer laboratories, a library, Home Economics facilities, dormitories, dining space, a sick bay and other campus resources.

The school has also dealt with pressure on boarding capacity. A Ghana News Agency anniversary report documented shortages in dormitory space and the need for continued support from government, parents and old students.

Student Life

Opassian identity links current students to a large old-student community. Alumni year groups continue to support the school with equipment, furniture and other practical needs.

OPASS also hosts debate, choir, sport, clubs and civic activities. In 2026, the school hosted a regional Independence Day debate involving schools from several regions.

That kind of event turns the school into more than a place where its own students attend lessons. It becomes a meeting point for public speaking, civic learning and competition.
