About Opoku Ware School

Institution overview and key context for prospective students.

Opoku Ware School opened in Kumasi in 1952 as a Catholic boys' secondary school. Over the decades, it has grown into a large school community with a strong academic culture, a visible old-boys network and traditions that students often carry long after leaving campus.

The school is widely known as OWASS, while its old boys are called Akatakyie. That name has become part of the school's identity, alongside the Latin motto Deus Lux Scientiae, meaning "God is the Light of Knowledge."

Opoku Ware's Catholic roots are still easy to see in its emphasis on discipline, moral formation and service. Those values sit alongside academic work, sport, house life and the wider community created by generations of students.

Opoku Ware offers Business, General Arts, General Science, STEM and Visual Arts; the programme pages explain the subjects in each option.

Institution guide

History

Opoku Ware School began in 1952 with a small pioneering group of boys in Kumasi. The school was established within the Catholic educational tradition and developed into one of the best-known boys' secondary schools in the Ashanti Region.

One of the most distinctive traditions started with the first intake. Students were given alphanumeric school numbers, beginning with the K group, and that numbering system continued across later generations. A Graphic Online reflection by an old boy explains how those numbers became tied to year groups and even house identity.

The school also developed a strong alumni culture around the name Akatakyie. Former students have continued to support the school through projects, mentorship and homecoming activities.

The school motto, Deus Lux Scientiae, reflects its Catholic roots and the belief that knowledge should be joined with moral formation.

Student Life

Opoku Ware has a strong old-boy identity, and the name Akatakyie is part of everyday school culture. It connects current students with generations of former students who continue to organise homecomings, mentorship and support for the school.

One tradition that stands out is the school numbering system. A student's number can identify his year group and, in some cases, even point to the house he belonged to. That makes the number part of a student's identity rather than a simple administrative code.

A Catholic Standard report on an Akatakyie homecoming shows how old boys return for activities ranging from counselling and football to thanksgiving Mass.

Accommodation

Opoku Ware School runs day and boarding arrangements. Day students leave after school activities, while Opoku Ware boarders continue with meals and evening study on campus.

Boarding has long been part of life at Opoku Ware. The school uses a house system, with houses named after Christian figures such as St. Andrew, St. James, St. John and St. Peter.

The house system is closely connected to the school's numbering tradition. An old-boy Graphic Online account explains how the final digit of a student's school number could determine his dormitory allocation.

When your Opoku Ware placement arrives, look for the part that says day or boarding.
