About Prempeh College

Institution overview and key context for prospective students.

Prempeh College opened in Kumasi in 1949 to fill a real gap. At the time, boys from Ashanti and the northern parts of the country who wanted recognised secondary education often had to travel south.

The school grew from a partnership involving the Kumasi Traditional Council, the Presbyterian and Methodist churches and the colonial government. The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Agyeman Prempeh II, also played a central role and provided land for the permanent site.

That mix of Ashanti identity, church influence and academic ambition is still visible in the College. The motto, Suban Ne Nimdeɛ, brings together character and knowledge, which is a useful summary of the values the school has carried for generations.

Business, General Arts, General Science, STEM and Visual Arts are available at Prempeh; use the programme pages to look at the subject combinations.

History

Prempeh College opened on 3 February 1949 with 50 students. Its first headmaster, Rev. S. N. Pearson, had come from Mfantsipim, and the new school began in temporary buildings left from the former 52nd Military Hospital.

The College was created through cooperation between the Kumasi Traditional Council, the Presbyterian and Methodist churches and the colonial government. Otumfuo Osei Agyeman Prempeh II took a close interest in the project and donated the land on which the school developed.

The original school colours of green and gold reflected Ashanti identity, while the crest combined the Akan stool with a Christian cross. The College history page gives a detailed account of how those different influences came together.

The motto was later changed to Suban Ne Nimdeɛ. It places good character beside knowledge, rather than treating academic success as the only measure of education.

Academics

Prempeh students work towards the WASSCE through a combination of core subjects and programme electives. The school's current official site lists Business, General Arts, General Science and Visual Arts, while the school register also identifies STEM among the options.

Thinking about General Science at Prempeh? The General Science guide lists the subjects you would take at Prempeh.

Prempeh has also built a strong reputation around science competitions and robotics. In 2016, a College team won the Robofest World Championship in Michigan, and the school later continued competing in national and international robotics events. Graphic Online covered the 2016 win and the technology behind the students' robot.

Facilities

Prempeh's campus has changed considerably from the temporary military-hospital buildings used when the school first opened. Academic blocks, boarding houses, science spaces and activity areas have been added over the years as the College grew.

The school has also developed a visible technology culture. Robotics appears on the official College site as an extracurricular activity, and students have represented Ghana in major competitions. A Graphic Online report on the World Robot Olympiad team gives a good example of how those activities work in practice.

Student Life

Prempeh has a strong old-student culture, and the name Amanfoɔ is closely tied to that identity. The connection does not begin after graduation. House life, school traditions, competitions and shared routines help create it while students are still on campus.

The College has long used inter-house activities as part of school life. An old-students policy document records traditions such as inter-house gardening and hygiene competitions, alongside plans for career talks and stronger alumni involvement.

Sport, debate, cadet activities, media work, robotics, cyber security and quiz competitions also appear among the extracurricular options listed by the school.

Accommodation

Prempeh College is a boarding school, and students live on campus during term.

Boarding has been central to Prempeh College since its early years. The school developed a house system as enrolment grew, and residential life became one of the main ways students built friendships and school identity.

A Graphic Online history of Prempeh describes how the College expanded from a small group of 50 boys to a much larger boarding community, with additional houses added over time.

Families preparing for Prempeh should use the school's current list of boarding supplies and reporting instructions.
