Institution guide

History

St. Francis Girls was established in 1959 by the Roman Catholic Church under the leadership of Bishop Gabriel Chapagne and Cardinal Peter Porekuu Dery, working with the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary.

The school's documented history describes it as the first girls' secondary school in northern Ghana and explains the Franciscan religious background behind the school.

The school was named for St. Francis of Assisi, whose ideals of simplicity, peace, humility and care for others fit the kind of formation the founders wanted for students.

The significance of St. Francis Girls is bigger than one campus. It helped make secondary education more reachable for girls across northern Ghana.

Residential infrastructure matters just as much in a girls' day-and-boarding school. A Ghanaian Times report records school concerns around accommodation, sanitation and transport, alongside the school's educational achievements.

Institution guide

Student Life

St. Francis Girls combines Catholic worship and discipline with clubs, sport, student leadership and service activities.

Students have also taken part in community blood-donation exercises. A Ghana News Agency report records St. Francis Girls as one of the Upper West schools that hosted and contributed to a regional blood-donation drive.

That kind of activity fits naturally with the school's motto because charity becomes something students practise rather than only something they read on the crest.
