History
St. Mary's was established on 6 February 1950 by the Catholic Missionary Sisters, Servants of the Holy Spirit. The first school community was remarkably small: ten girls taught by Reverend Sisters Jane and Rosette.
A current school history records those beginnings and the Catholic values that continue to influence the school.
The school developed in Korle Gonno into a much larger girls' school while keeping its focus on girls' education in the classroom and beyond.
The scale has changed dramatically, but the central purpose has remained consistent: give girls a serious academic education alongside character formation.

Programme choices at St. Mary's Senior High School, Korle Gonno include Business, General Arts, General Science, Home Economics and Visual Arts.
That current list matters because older directories sometimes show additional programmes that are no longer in the verified selection register.

Facilities
St. Mary's has to support both academic and residential life on an urban Accra campus. Public school information lists science laboratories, ICT facilities, an Art Studio, classrooms and dining facilities among the spaces students use.
For a programme such as Home Economics or Visual Arts, the quality and accessibility of specialist spaces matters just as much as ordinary classroom accommodation.
Student Life
The word Merries gives students and old girls a shared identity that extends beyond their years in school. Old students organise through the St. Mary's Old Girls' Association, commonly known as SMOGA.
The school's 75th anniversary brochure shows how alumnae, staff, students and the founding religious tradition come together around the school's history and future.
Sport, debate, quizzes, cultural activities and leadership add other layers to student life.
