About Tamale Girls Senior High

Tamale Girls Senior High was created to answer a very specific need in northern Ghana: more dedicated secondary-school space for girls. The school began in the 1998/99 academic year through collaboration involving RAINS/CAMFED, the Regional Coordinating Council and the Ghana Education Service.

The first intake was only 62 girls, supported by 12 teachers. Since then, the school has grown into a large day-and-boarding school whose identity centres on girls' education, discipline, confidence and academic opportunity.

For Tamale Girls, the available programmes are Business, General Arts, General Science and Home Economics; their subjects are listed on the programme pages.

History

History

Tamale Girls Senior High was established in the 1998/99 academic year as the first girls' senior high school in the Northern Region.

The school's official history explains that RAINS/CAMFED worked with the Regional Coordinating Council and Ghana Education Service to respond to the shortage of dedicated secondary education opportunities for girls.

The first group numbered 62 students with 12 teachers. Mr. Issah Issahaku served as the first acting head, followed by the school's first substantive headmistress, Miss Mercy Amanquandoh.

The school was not founded simply to add another SHS to Tamale. It was created because girls in the region needed more room to continue their education.

Academics

Academics

The current school register lists Business, Home Economics, General Arts and General Science at Tamale Girls.

That programme list gives you four very different academic directions. General Science leans heavily on mathematics and laboratory science, Business centres more on commercial and quantitative subjects, while Home Economics combines academic and practical work.

The General Science guide shows what students study in that option at Tamale Girls.

Facilities

Facilities

Tamale Girls has been expanding its learning facilities as the school population and academic expectations grow.

In 2026, an ICT laboratory was refurbished to give students better access to areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics, software development, cybersecurity and automation.

The same report also documented continuing needs around furniture, beds, classroom space, dormitories, roads and building maintenance.

Student Life

Student Life

The school's mission goes beyond examination results. Its official values include success, respect, discipline, excellence, good morals, teamwork and loyalty.

Students take part in leadership, science, sport, advocacy and career activities. Tamale Girls has also returned to the National Science and Maths Quiz national stage, giving science students another space to test themselves outside ordinary classroom work.
