About Tema Senior High School

Institution overview and key context for prospective students.

Tema Senior High School opened in 1961 as the new city of Tema itself was taking shape. The school began with 52 students and quickly grew into a major mixed day-and-boarding school serving Tema and students from across Ghana.

The school is widely known as TEMASCHO, while students and old students often use the Anchorite identity. Its motto, Nil Nisi Optima, means "Nothing But The Best."

Students at TEMASCHO can choose Business, General Arts, General Science, Home Economics and Visual Arts, with the programme pages showing what each choice covers.

Institution guide

History

Tema Senior High opened on 22 September 1961 with 52 students. By the end of the first month, the school had already grown to 105 students organised into three Form One streams.

The school's official history records Dr. F. K. Buah as the first headmaster and describes an early academic programme that included both Arts and Science subjects.

The school's development happened alongside Tema's growth as a planned industrial city, giving TEMASCHO a strong connection to the identity of the wider community.

The school and the city grew up together. That link is still part of what makes TEMASCHO feel distinctly Tema.

Academics

The current school register lists Business, Home Economics, Visual Arts, General Arts and General Science at Tema Senior High.

Those five programmes create several different routes into tertiary education and work. General Science demands a stronger science and mathematics load, while Visual Arts and Home Economics depend more heavily on practical work.

The Business guide shows what students study in that option at TEMASCHO.

Admissions & Entry Guidance

Applications to Tema Senior High School go through the national placement system after BECE. When choosing TEMASCHO after BECE, compare the subjects in Business, General Arts, General Science, Home Economics and Visual Arts.

TEMASCHO has day and boarding students, but your placement will say which applies to you. Read it on the CSSPS website.

Facilities

TEMASCHO supports academic, practical and residential life on the Community 5 campus. Science laboratories, dormitories, washrooms, water systems and activity spaces all affect the student experience.

Old students have repeatedly invested in those areas. A Ghana News Agency report documented TOSA projects involving science-lab refurbishment, dormitories, washrooms, streetlights and a planned water-storage system.

Student Life

TEMASCHO students share a strong Anchorite identity, and the school gives students several ways to participate beyond lessons.

The school's student-life page highlights sports, clubs, community service, student leadership and the role of the Parent-Teacher Association and old students.

TOSA remains especially visible through mentorship, scholarships and infrastructure support, connecting current students with people who passed through TEMASCHO years earlier.

Accommodation

Tema Senior High School takes day students as well as boarders. Meals, evening study and dormitory routines are part of the week for boarders at TEMASCHO.

When your TEMASCHO placement arrives, look for the part that says day or boarding.
