About Benkum Senior High
Benkum Senior High in Larteh-Akuapem was established in 1949 by Dr Alex Ansah Kofi of the Ekumide family. The school began as Larteh National Secondary School before its name changed as the school became more closely identified with the wider Akuapem traditional structure.
The name "Benkum" refers to the position of the Chief of Larteh as the Benkumhene of Akuapem. That gives the school a local identity that goes beyond geography and connects it directly to the traditional history of the area.
BENSCO has Agricultural Science, Business, General Arts, General Science, Home Economics and Visual Arts, and the programme pages can help you compare the subject combinations.

History
Benkum Senior High was established in 1949 by Dr Alex Ansah Kofi of the Ekumide family of Ahenease, Larteh-Akuapem.
A current school profile records that the school began as Larteh National Secondary School, later became Larteh Secondary School and was eventually renamed Benkum Senior High.
The final name reflects the place of the Larteh chief as Benkumhene within the Akuapem traditional structure.
That naming history tells you something important about the school: BENSCO is not only located in Larteh. Its identity has been deliberately tied to the community and traditional area it serves.

Facilities
School profiles mention science, ICT, library, Home Economics, Visual Arts, dormitory and sporting facilities at BENSCO.
Water has also been a practical issue on campus. A BOSA year group commissioned a mechanised borehole after identifying water access as a basic problem affecting the school community.
Student Life
BOSA, the Benkum Old Students Association, is one of the most visible parts of the school's wider community.
Old students continue to organise around infrastructure, mentoring and long-term support for BENSCO. The association's 2026 AGM again centred on the idea that alumni should remain an active backbone for the school rather than simply gather for reunions.
Accommodation
Benkum Senior High has both day and boarding students. Boarders at BENSCO stay on campus for meals and evening study, while day students go home after school activities.
Boarding gives students more time inside the school community, but it also makes water, sanitation, dormitory routines and shared responsibility part of the educational experience.
When your BENSCO placement arrives, look for the part that says day or boarding.
