About Nkawkaw Senior High

Nkawkaw Senior High, widely known as KAWSEC, emerged from the closure of the old Nkawkaw Training College and opened as a secondary school in 1969. Rt. Rev. Victor Buer Nartey-Tokoli played a central role in turning that transition into a new opportunity for young people in the area.

The motto, "Education for Service," captures the founding idea well. Learning was not supposed to end with personal advancement; it was meant to prepare students to contribute to their communities and country.

You can study Agricultural Science, Business, General Arts, General Science, Home Economics and Visual Arts at KAWSEC; check the programme pages to see how the options differ.

History

KAWSEC opened in 1969 after Nkawkaw Training College was closed. Rt. Rev. Victor Buer Nartey-Tokoli helped secure the site, build support for the new secondary school and encourage families to enrol their children.

A 50th-anniversary reflection by old students records an initial population of 25 students and seven teachers, rising to 70 students by the end of the first year.

The early intake included young people whose education might otherwise have ended, including former student teachers, workers and students who had fallen out of the normal school path.

That makes KAWSEC's foundation unusually practical: the school was built to rescue educational opportunity for people who still had ability but no obvious route forward.

Student Life

KAWSEC's old-student community has kept the phrase "Education for Service" closely connected to the school's identity.

Anniversary accounts repeatedly return to the founder's effort to give educational opportunity to students who might otherwise have been left behind. That history gives service a concrete meaning rather than turning it into an abstract slogan.

Sport, clubs, leadership and academic competition give current students their own ways to contribute and develop.
