About University Practice Senior High
University Practice Senior High grew from an unusual idea. A public secondary school close to the University of Cape Coast would give education students a place to observe teaching and complete practical training.
The school formally opened in 1976 and grew from that practice-school role into a full mixed day-and-boarding school. Its motto, "Service to the Community," still fits the original relationship between the school, the university and the wider public education system.
UPSHS gives students a choice of Agricultural Science, Business, General Arts, General Science, Home Economics and Visual Arts; the programme pages set out the subjects in each one.

History
The Faculty of Education at the University of Cape Coast proposed University Practice Senior High. It would give future teachers a real secondary-school setting for their practical training.
An archived school website records that the school formally opened in 1976 with 112 pioneer students, including sixth-form students studying Arts and Science.
The arrangement divided responsibility between the University of Cape Coast and the Ghana Education Service, with the university supporting physical facilities while GES provided teaching and non-teaching staff.
That origin gives UPSHS a different story from most public schools in Cape Coast. It was designed not only to educate secondary students, but also to help train the people who would teach students elsewhere.
Academics
University Practice Senior High's 6 programmes are Agricultural Science, Business, General Arts, General Science, Home Economics and Visual Arts.
The school began with a much narrower Arts and Science offering, so the present six-programme list shows how far the academic structure has expanded.
The subjects within General Science are set out in the General Science guide; check them before choosing UPSHS.

Facilities
Public school profiles list science laboratories, an ICT laboratory, a library, Home Economics and Visual Arts facilities, dormitory space and classroom blocks at UPSHS.
The school historically relied heavily on University of Cape Coast libraries and science facilities, which made its location part of the learning environment rather than just an address.
Student Life
UPSHS sits in an education-rich part of Cape Coast, and students have opportunities to connect school life with activities involving universities, civic organisations and other secondary schools.
Students have taken part in science and mathematics competition, cultural programmes and civic-education activities. The school has also historically had a Confucius classroom connection, adding an international language and cultural dimension to campus life.
Accommodation
University Practice Senior High takes day students as well as boarders. Meals, evening study and dormitory routines are part of the week for boarders at UPSHS.
